In this documentary we are introduced to Rania. She looks forward to school every day, because not all the children in her home are allowed to study. She has lived in a huge tent city in Jordan ever since she and her family had to flee Syria before the war. The difficult conditions only reinforce her wish to become an engineer to turn the world into a better place one day.

El Alto, Bolivia, is growing fast – wild, but not shapeless. An investigation into urban aesthetics comes across the Cholets: miniature palaces which serve as residential and business premises for wealthy indigenous Aymara families. The colourful, shining constructions may resemble spaceships lost in the urban wastelands. But a double movement of expert commentary and city symphony lays bare the social foundations of this eclectic architecture.

Life is no picnic, especially not for a Kurdish bachelor in Istanbul. Seven single seasonal workers from Eastern Anatolia live in a dilapidated house in the metropolis. The men from two generations form an unusual flat sharing community. They live and sleep at extremely close quarters, sharing a single shower, which occasionally leads to heated arguments: typical flat share disputes about doing the dishes or tidying up. The older among them settle them with fatherly authority.

The protagonists talk about their origins and dreams. The German filmmaker Dirk Schäfer, who has lived in Istanbul for a long time, interweaves their poetic descriptions with sensitive observations of their partnership of convenience. Experiences of social discrimination and chicanery leave their traces, but humour and friendship make their life easier – or, as one of the “bachelors” puts it with a touch of humour: Now he is a street seller of Ottoman sugar paste to lend some sweetness to his life.

Markus is Honorary Mayor in Saxony-Anhalt. In 2015, he and his wife commit themselves to providing shelter for forty refugees. Then “his” commune of Tröglitz takes on a strange visage: The population is disturbingly polarised and suddenly the refugee home is on fire. This animated documentary tries to understand what happened. Dark hatchings and shadings are contrasted with idyllic watercolour landscapes and bear witness to things that are lost and things that must be resolved.

In 1944, the French resistance fighter Robert Antelme was captured by the Germans. He was taken to Gandersheim, a satellite camp of the Buchenwald concentration camp. In the last months of the Second World War, Antelme got to experience the whole extent of dehumanisation under National Socialist tyranny. Soon after his liberation he wrote the book “The Human Race” about it, which today is a classic of coming to terms with the past.

Stefan Hayn already dealt with Antelme in his film “Straub” (2014). Now he examines in more detail a series of texts which contributed to the post-war debate about how to deal with German guilt. Hayn calls his film a “lecture filmée” in the opening credits, a “filmed reading”. It is of crucial importance that the texts (including reflections on a theft of bread among prisoners) are present in the French original, even if recited by German native speakers. Different forms of “reading” that culminate in a sketch-like scenic re-enactment are interlaced with contemporary shots of memorial sites today to form a multi-layered film essay, historical-political in the best sense.

A fixed, subjective camera. Confidentially but resolutely, a young woman leans toward us and begins the personality optimisation treatment. “Update installed”. Immovable, helpless, chipped for the future, all data capitalised. “Accept”. Wellness turns into science fiction horror, cosmetic gold dust into a toxic threat. The belated victory of HAL 9000.

Anna Friedrich follows Sven Axel Nilsson into the morning fog. Sven Axel works as a farmer somewhere in Sweden, the sea nearby. But he is much more than that. Friedrich teases it out of him by asking him about his dreams and fears, by wanting to know which of the four elements is his favourite. She hands him the camera because he wants to film stones, so a short but no less spectacular contribution about a mystical rock formation becomes part of this unconventional portrait. But Sven Axel also likes acting and so, without further ado, he becomes this, too: an actor.

Far away from almost any disturbance, the two begin a kind of game in which both Sven Axel’s mother and an area used by the Swedish army for exercises play roles. “For me the world is a quite big globe. ’Cause I haven’t travelled so much in my life,” he says. And adds: “Now, the wide, wide world seems very small. But it’s not true. If you sail, or you’re walking or you ride, it’s quite a big world, it is.” In any case, Sven Axel’s world is an extremely rich one. Anna Friedrich makes it negotiable.

Every year in January, the Swiss village of Davos provides the backdrop for the World Economic Forum (WEF). This conference is a meeting of the global economic and political elites. It’s true, the public debates and press conferences have been streamed on the WEF website for a while now, in the spirit of a transparent, albeit suspiciously semi-official, audiovisual protocol – but never in the now 49 years of the WEF’s history was an independent filmmaker allowed any insight into the machinery of the event or behind the facades of the institution.

Over a period of three years, director Marcus Vetter observed the workings of this machinery. He cast a few but highly concentrated looks at the history of the Forum, founded in 1971 by Klaus Schwab, and now very confidently combines individual biographies, historical moments, logical connections and matters flitting about at the periphery to form the complex picture of a global fabric. Klaus Schwab, 79 today, is pleased with the fabric metaphor, since he himself has repeatedly said that the threads of the world may be coming together at “his” WEF, but that its knots acquire meaning and purpose only when the threads are later redistributed responsibly. This film is about no less than those threads and thus the meaning and purpose of the WEF.

A straightforward dispute. It started in 1990 with a reading of the writer Jürgen Fuchs from memory records of his detention in a Stasi prison. A listener stood up and said: “I’m one of the people you describe. But nobody talks to us.” Tamara Trampe and Johann Feindt subjected themselves to the experience of letting him, the other, talk: conversations in front of the camera, shortly after reunification, with a lecturer in “Operative Psychology” at the university of the Ministry for State Security. He was interested in people, had wished for more “humane” methods of interrogation, he says. Beyond that not a word of regret.

In the Erzgebirge a West German “investor” calls the residents „natives“ who had better decide whether they want his money. The Leipzig Round Table rejects Coca Cola as a sponsor for a music event. In Görlitz a young city councillor botches a “Waiters’ Contest”. In Laubusch a minister observes the arrival of the first German expats from the Ukraine in Direct Cinema style. Images that can’t be found in any public television archive: local television reports. The camera is close and everywhere, the unbiased interviewers are neighbours of their viewers and themselves involved in the processes they record, calling for feedback and taking up a position.
