How much black humour does it take to defy the horror? “The Masturbator – The Adventures of Edgar Hilsenrath” delves into the radical world of the writer and Holocaust survivor Edgar Hilsenrath – one of the first who dared to face the trauma with grotesque wit and unrestrained laughter. In a mixture of animation and historical archive material, the film follows Hilsenrath’s alter ego from his novel “Fuck America”: a penniless, sex-obsessed writer in 1950s New York who is desperately trying to publish his memories of the ghetto under the title “The Masturbator”. Writing becomes an obsession, a provocation and an act of survival. Born in Leipzig in 1926, Hilsenrath’s path took him through Nazi Germany, Bukovina and a Transnistrian ghetto via Palestine and France to America and back to Europe. A journey through places of loss, hope and disappointment. A journey through a century in which the ghosts of fascism keep returning. Burlesque animations collide with raw, real-life images. This friction gives rise to the portrait of an artist whose books are international successes but who fell into obscurity in Germany. “The Masturbator” combines biography, memory and the present to create a film that is as unsettling as it is liberating, about the power of satire and the necessity to speak out against forgetting.

An institutional portrait in the form of an elegy: after more than sixty years, the fate of the Les Lilas maternity clinic already seems sealed. Having not worked in a profitable enough manner, this private institution is now to have the subsidies it relies on withdrawn. Alain Kassanda’s film accompanies the clinic’s last flicker of resistance, showing heated internal meetings and the public protests aimed at saving it. The interactions between the purple-uniformed staff and their patients come to the fore at the same time: offering caring guidance across the entire birth process, precisely explaining the specifics of an imminent abortion or advising a young couple confronted with an unplanned pregnancy. Everyday life in the Maternité des Lilas is both eventful and moving. And it can look back on a long tradition: deeply anchored in the second wave of the women’s movement, the clinic made history for its progressive approach. Everyone was supposed be able to give birth in the way they saw fit, the patriarchy was banished from the delivery room and operating theatre – “mon corps, mon choix”. This inconspicuous place retained this forward-looking approach to the last. Alain Kassanda’s lament is far from maudlin. It is the unsentimental depiction of a loss only justifiable on paper.

Jimena is in her twenties, a young woman who goes by the nickname La Pichi and grew up on the edge of Buenos Aires close to the port, the other side of the invisible line that separates centre from periphery. These are not mere descriptions, but rather how she tells it herself – her garrulousness knows no bounds, which makes her the perfect storyteller. Like a Scheherazade porteña, La Pichi tells a new story each night and there are so many it’s easy to lose count. With their extravagant titles, her stories of relationships, family, body issues and class might seem like tall tales, but they are all plucked from her everyday reality, the same reality lived on the fringes that we see in velvety nocturnal images during and in between her voiceover monologues, which are narrated with an infectious enthusiasm and humour that belies their ambivalent undercurrents: the tale of the boyfriend who didn’t want to be seen with her, the tale of the transvestite-loving grandmother who cooked glorious food she wasn’t supposed to eat, the tale of the father with vitiligo who at one point was no longer there. Yet this is no narrative of hardship and suffering, but rather one of irrepressible, inspirational joy, for what can be more empowering than being given space to chronicle your own biography on your own terms? As La Pichi herself says, “I wasn’t one word, I was many.”

Aren’t psychiatrists also dependent on their patients? For Chris Sullivan, there’s no doubt about it: he certainly is, particularly when it comes to long, intensive treatment programmes that require a lot of empathy. For his black-and-white feature-length film, he therefore chose a radical narrative approach in which treatment room and mental condition constantly merge in associative fashion, meaning we don’t know exactly where we are. It’s only the central points of reference which are defined: a long-standing patient of Dr. Durwood Richards, Rosemary Hamm is both his research object and the subject of his book. She suffers from schizophrenia and is therefore sometimes convinced that she lives on a Soviet space station in the 1960s during the Cold War. She also has one-on-one conversations with a large buffalo there (who speaks with the voice of Boris Karloff, who played the legendary role of Frankenstein’s monster in the 1931 film). Sullivan repeatedly makes the thin line separating Rosemary’s imagined worlds (animation) and the reality of the therapy sessions (live action) tangible – sometimes the animated patient stays seated in the room, sometimes she reluctantly slips of out her rotoscoped shell. In all these realms, whether fictional or real, the themes also overlap, orbiting doctor and patient like satellites: loss, love and above all forgiveness.

On New Year's Eve 2023, Thomas Heise begins to shoot his new film. It is to be called “Übergang”. His idea: A film in the “Heimatfilm” tradition revolving around Berlin’s Schönhauser Allee, where he has lived for decades. The author is to be a character in the film. A few months later, Heise falls seriously ill and dies. The small team continues to work on the film, unearthing unpublished texts and images from Heise’s estate and archives. “Images are […] encompassing”, Heiner Müller is quoted, but dreams curdle quickly. As soon as the personal story becomes a false image, it is gently but persistently put into perspective. A touching email exchange Heise had with a female high-school graduate in Karlsruhe who is searching for truth contains a whole primer for documentary filmmaking: “See what you would not otherwise see. Stay patient. […] Never expect financial security. Be happy about that. Because it won’t change.” Peter Badel and Chris Wright have not produced a hermetic artist tribute, but have, utterly in the spirit of Heise, pieced together fragments of lived history.

French critic and activist Michèle Firk died at the age of 31 and left little behind: several texts in the film magazine Positif, the draft script for a film never made, diary entries and a farewell letter in case of her death. Taking these writings as a starting point, Laura Cazador traces out her short, radical life in the late 1950s and 1960s. A life that is not just closely connected to film history, but also the left-wing discourses and anti-imperialistic movements of that era. Firk politicised during the Algerian War, got involved in Socialist Cuba and later joined the armed struggle in Guatemala. Ben Barka, Salvador Allende, Fidel Castro and Ché Guevara drift eerily through the fascinatingly dense archival material of this film – everything connected by the idea of the Tricontinental. The Havana conference that Firk worked on was supposed to be held in 1966 and call a new, non-aligned alliance between the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America into being. Having trained as a film director herself in Cuba, Cazador grasps Firk as a point of contention and of reference for her own filmmaking in the present. The film thus reflects on the connection between cinephilia and political engagement not just based on Firk’s texts, but also with the images of the “Third Cinema”.

Chinese expat artist Viv Li ends up in Berlin during the pandemic. Her inquisitive attempts to enter the city’s queer subculture sound different when she tries to tell her Maoist-influenced relatives in Beijing about her experiences – the film smoothly navigates between cultures, in search of where the boundaries of adaptability lie and where individual identity starts. Yet Li is never interested in playing one world off against the other, choosing instead to approach both of them with frankness and a healthy dose of humour and playfulness. She places songs by Trio and Juliane Werding over impressions of Chinese sights, stages the escape from Beijing’s tightly-knit surveillance network as a virtuoso gangster ballet and has Mao rise up from behind a mountain range to ask with fatherly concern: “Are you okay?”

He is „always sad“, says Uncle Thuận. Connected via mobile phone with his family who are scattered across the world he sings sentimental songs about spring in Hanoi. Meanwhile, his wife Thúy tirelessly looks after the restaurant that the two have been managing in North Rhine-Westphalia for twenty years. They came to the GDR as contract workers at the age of 19. In conversations with their daughters, life stories unfold in which they were rarely expected to decide anything but always to work hard and to function. A role they accept without complaint and justify even today. But the protective shell accumulated over decades increasingly begins to show cracks. And somewhere in the endless routines and tasks of a restaurant kitchen which also structure the film, a question quietly emerges: the question of happiness. In Minh Anh Nguyễn, a post-migrant generation speaks up who regard contract work and racism in the GDR not as a closed chapter but as part of their history. Casual and very close to her protagonists, she tells of colonial legacies that have inscribed themselves into biographies and across generations. At the same time, she shows how this cycle can be broken: By the daughters asking questions which – even outside the Vietnamese community and above all in the East – are long overdue.

New York City is the city where anything is possible – including being just one pay cheque away from bankruptcy. This is the reality for workers at Amazon, UPS and various delivery apps. Every day, they deliver millions of parcels and orders across the city, even as they often remain invisible as the actual people behind this work. Following her Oscar-winning films “Harlan County, USA” and “American Dream”, “Union Town” completes Barbara Kopple’s trilogy on workers’ rights. Over the course of three years, she follows the workers in their struggle against some of the world’s most powerful corporations. While UPS drivers and Amazon employees rely on strikes and organising trade unions, the predominantly migrant cycle couriers working for delivery apps are also trying to unite. They are all fighting for fairer wages, safe working conditions and recognition of their work. To the corporations, they are expendable, but united as a union, they are fighting back. Amid fears for their livelihoods, family worries and the courage to go on strike, we see what solidarity and community can achieve.

Some childhood wounds never heal. Once primary school boy Tsubasa and Kyotaro make friends, their dreary existences as outsiders finally come to an end: they see each other, they understand each other. Tsubasa actually prefers origami to pursuing dreams of being a football star and is under a lot of pressure to excel by his mum, who barely gives him any affection at all. Kyotaro lives with his old, impoverished grandmother and likes nothing more than drawing dinosaurs. Together, they wander through the neighbourhood, they play, they are inseparable. Yet Kyotaro’s impulsive, nerdy manner and the other children’s mean tongues sow the seeds of mistrust in Tsubasa – is his best friend perhaps an alien? One little misunderstanding and a bigger confrontation lead to everything falling apart. Kohei Kadowaki’s debut takes its time in crafting the perspectives of both children: the camera often lingers close to stunned, horrified or crying faces that sometimes morph into aliens – the director uses rotoscoping to make the emotions particularly tangible. This empathetic emotionality is also a distinguishing feature of the narration, which seems to be pushing the “coming of age” principle to the realm of absurdity: trapped by society’s masculinity conventions, both protagonists are condemned to grow up eternally wounded, perhaps never to fully arrive in the here and now.

A duet for two church organs, played by AI-driven robots, and a score composed live with the audience. In this site-specific installation, visitors are invited to both guide and experience a composition which collapses time and flips musical traditions on their head.

The two organs of the Heilandskirche have only been played by human hands, but that’s about the change. Trained on two edges of a musical spectrum – on music from the European Middle Ages, and contemporary electronic music – the AI players imagine hypothetical musical realities somewhere in between. As visitors enter the space, they begin to explore an invisible map, which conducts the AI players in one musical direction or another in search of a musical bridge between past and present. Ever-changing and unique, the piece is a singular audio experience felt with the entire body, and the body, in return, guides this musical composition. Played twice only, for three hours at a time, nothing is pre-determined nor repeated.

Alba Zari was born in Bangkok inside what was said to be “a hippie community” that her grandmother, Rosa, and her mother, Ivana, had joined. But she doesn’t recall much of her childhood. Longing for answers, Alba delves into the painful work of remembering: trying to understand her grandmother’s decision to join the Children of God sect, the far‑reaching consequences of her mother’s indoctrination, and her father’s identity. In conversations and everyday moments with her grandmother and mother, Alba learns more about the cult, the ‘Flirty Fishing’ practice, and widespread sexual and psychological abuse of its members, including children. The traces of pain are still tangible years later, showing in Alba’s tears rushing out before words, in the trembling of hands, and in her mother’s constant over-apologising. Alba “lives the questions”, hoping to find answers; however, as the journey unfurls, she realises it may not be about answers but about accepting absence as a constant presence, and not being defined by it. A film about family wounds, memory, and the resilience of ties that bind us.
