What’s the worst thing that could happen to a jubilant young father? A visit from the in-laws. What’s worse, they are citizens of Mother Russia, while the filmmaker father’s native language is Spanish, which means that the baby isn’t named Alyosha but, exactly, Carlos. It’s for him, “Carlushka”, that he wanted to record this hilarious and painful new family constellation unfolding between national chauvinism and loving, well-worn marital arguments, the director says. Sharp tongues, skilfully edited.

The Sandu family got three kilos of rice from the state as compensation for their bombed house in Grosny. After that not much was left of the lives of three women – grandmother, mother, daughter. Vladlena Sandu tells a thoughtful and dignified tale of physical and psychological trauma and the normal career of a refugee, including dog food, “trauma” certificate, homelessness and intensive care. Putin’s thanks on New Year’s Day go to the terrorism-fighting home country. Words fail them. Silence. Turmoil. Bewilderment.

A romance in Arkhangelsk, based on a story by Boris Shergin, inspired by the Russian avant-garde and naïf folk art. This animated time machine delves deep into the past, dissolves perspectives and: makes everything new again. Cats are there, but not the right woman. Love is there, but must be searched. Soviet reality is woven in – drinkers, peasants and cattle – as well as a rich soundtrack in which a dreamy fairytale Russian has the dialect of the White Sea.

A mother of four children puzzles about love. One thing is clear: She needs sex. She also knows: So many allegedly happy couples hold on to their mutual error. It’s more honest to get a divorce. The Russian original title means “age of transition”. And that can hit you in every phase of life. The teenagers discuss with their mother what strategies can be used to face it. The experienced midwife, in all frankness, chooses her own path to happiness.

The Conversation Anastasia Novikova

Somewhere in a lonely landscape, in a humble cabin, an old man sits at the window. A mobile phone is on the table, he’s waiting for a call. In the meantime he talks to himself, since his wife is far away, in hospital.

The conversation is largely with himself. Somewhere in a lonely landscape, in a humble cabin, an old man sits at the window. A mobile phone is on the table, he’s waiting for a call. In the meantime he talks to himself, since his wife is far away, in hospital. A spider weaves its web on the ceiling, a water kettle simmers, time passes. A composition of exquisite moments of melancholy: a lament for the absent wife and at the same time an ode to being together.
