About

Immerse yourself in events dedicated to the art and industry of animated film on Thursday 29 October. Join us for a roundtable organised in cooperation with Animation Production Days to discuss the current state and future prospects of adult animation in Europe. Get inspired by a Masterclass with Trollfilm founder Anita Killi, offering a look behind the scenes of the studio’s evolution and creative process behind their first feature-length film. The renowned Norwegian studio famous for their multiplane cut-out animation is celebrated by an hommage film programme this year.

Listen to a panel co-organised with ASIFA Germany (AG Animationsfilm) on how European animation can get out of the niche and reach wider audiences. Attend a talk about the KEY FRAMES regional funding initiative from MDR and MDM, supporting animated films that address current social issues (event will be held in German). Connect with colleagues from the animation and documentary worlds at Animation Meets Doc, then start the evening at the Get Together Animation & XR at the DOK Neuland XR exhibition space kindly hosted by ASIFA Germany and the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film. Round off the day with Animation Perspectives where directors Anton Cla and Franz Impler explore the limitations of early game animations in a quirky style.

On Friday 30 October, don’t miss the Animation Night ‘Outta Space’, featuring a universe of space-themed experimental film and cinematic live performance.

Masterclass: Anita Killi

Empathy is the animated essence of every Trollfilm production. With its Animated Film Hommage, DOK Leipzig wants to honour the Trollfilm Studio – which has been active for more than 30 years – for its humanism.

In a masterclass, Anita Killi traces Trollfilm’s journey from the first multiplane stand and her 1992 film “The Glass Ball” to a new stand planned for 2026. She explores analogue animation as a tool for approaching themes that are difficult to talk about directly, inviting viewers to be co-creators.

Zu sehen ist ein voller Kinosaal, mit Menschen, die richtung Leinwand schauen und in blaues Licht getaucht sind.
Animation Night

Outta Space

Throughout its history, sci-fi cinema has used animation and animated effects as key tools for depicting outer space, alien worlds and distant galaxies. In celebration, Animation Night invites you to leave Earthly reality behind and venture with us on a cosmic journey into a universe of space-themed experimental film and cinematic live performance.
