Fishermen on the Ghanaian coast going about their daily business – or at least the work they must do to ultimately have some kind of business (perhaps). In the same spirit, filmmaker Elke Groen, in her respectful and reserved observation, has no preconceptions of what the ultimate result of this material shot on one day in May 2016 is to be. So this is no quick report in which everything is eventually reduced to one pithy idea, but the cinematographic creation of an experience space.

A mental satellite film about the refugee situation in autumn 2015. A low-pressure system bringing politically provoked rough weather and diffuse fears hangs over Austria and Europe. Time lapses show outlines of cloud formations moving across the screen, laboriously etched into and animated on 3,000 glass panes by Veronika Schubert. Meandering without borders, they are accompanied by flashes of soundbites in which politicians and newscasters clearly discern migration problems in the fog.

Nothing is closer to us than our skin, artfully enveloping our self with its beautiful and less beautiful parts, defining the boundary between us and everything else. A serene camera pan past naked body parts. A tour of discovery leading from a shining hill to a rounded ledge down to a shady chasm. A neck. A leg…chest. A belly…ear. A fellybear? Claudia Larcher assembles photos, video clips and sounds into an equally compelling and irritating body collage.
