Three women on the run. Srđan Keča portrays individual lives on the background of a struggle for survival within the same basic structure. Danijela, Elvira, and Galiba are Roma, each of them suffering in her own way in the patriarchal environment she grew up in and trying to escape from preconceived patterns.
At the start we see Danijela as an open-minded girl who plays football and has ambitious goals for the future. But suddenly she runs away from home and stays away from school – she has married out of the blue. Her mother and teachers are at a loss, horrified and sad, but powerless. Elvira, on the other hand, is a struggling single mother. After she was deserted by the father of the child she wants to give her daughter a better future. Education is the most important factor to help disrupt the cycle of violence and poverty. Galiba, the third woman, is desperately trying to break away from a life that has nothing to offer but oppression and abuse. Very slowly she manages to regain a certain degree of dignity and self-respect.
This film was supported by the NGO CARE that aids the integration and self-determination of Roma in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

On 28 June 1914, Gavrilo Princip shot the heir presumptive to the Austrian-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand, in Sarajevo. A momentous assassination that is considered to have triggered the First World War.

Exactly 100 years later, Bosnian director Jasmila Žbanić, who has already tried to come to terms with history in her award winning feature films, visits the site of the historic event and asks people what they think of the assassin. Some see Princip as a national hero who fought for Bosnian freedom; others see him as a terrorist who destroyed the existing order. Žbanić mixes her own material with images the inhabitants and tourists recorded on their mobile devices, juxtaposing these contemporary images with excerpts from feature films about the assassination. The result is a multilayered view of the event and its consequences, not without some funny moments but primarily a reflection about what a nation deduces from its history. In Sarajevo, almost ahistorical moments of celebrations with marching children in uniform and machine guns are set against the critical voices of the counter-demonstrators who, in the spirit of the Occupy movement, are fighting against a new occupation of Bosnia: this time by capitalism.

The one image that would be the key to everything, one’s identity, past, parents, exists only in our mind. History has destroyed it forever. Still, the search for it makes something visible: Nature, which still provides a framework for the old hometown, the substance of buildings still inscribed with traces of past suffering, new life that appropriates childhood homes and even – a moment of relief – a comedic miniature at the hairdresser’s.

Different people are watching football at different places on earth and in space. While the game connects them all, every one of them has his or her own problems to cope with. A European community project about our favourite sport.
