The French title of this film is “Foyers”, which can be translated as “fireside” or “home”. For some people, this home is most clearly visible in the fire. But they see something else there. They are called arsonists. An essay of documentary voices, thermal images, impressions from a match stick factory, and a burning flat.

The Place de la République in Paris serves as provisional home base and intersection point for the bicycle couriers Ibrahim, Bathily and Martin. They live far out in the suburbs, but the streets around the square are their territory. In this job they earn fast money, but very little. Artfully artless observations by the filmmaker – as if this story were happening just like that and in passing. But how delicately this “in passing” is created!

From a bird’s eye perspective, the metropolis is heralded by mysterious patterns in the desert: the grid is already laid out for the growing megacity of Los Angeles. There, in the middle of the jungle of streets, a yellow line orders and divides traffic. Who makes sure that this line always looks freshly painted, competing with the sun for brightness? This filmic ode to a piece of street marking supplies the answers, and the sound to go with them.
