A face is being drawn with a pencil. The countenance of a woman emerges. Old and suddenly a girl again. In her bedroom the film of her life unfolds by key moments. Changes are made visible by the eraser and new drawings. The girl becomes a woman, a lover brings a storm of mystical and fantastical elements. The arrival of the child opens new dimensions not only in the room. The child scrutinises the world and looks right into our eyes.

An extremely tender portrait of Aster, a blind young mother who lives with her little daughter in a shared home for single mothers in Ethiopia. Her low singing about love and little mice pervades the film like a seeing person’s dream. The little girl is still called Bethi, but Aster wants to change her name to Medanit: the Amharic word for cure. The child leads her from darkness to light. She is her mother’s eye.

The King wakes up after a long and deep sleep, but doesn´t know what to do with all the time he has. Hoping to find an answer he assembles an automaton, but in vain, because the wheel of time follows its own rules. In this bizarre fairy tale, the decomposition of organic matter, oxidized metal and cracked surfaces visually underline a cryptic puppet animation that circles like a helicoid around the main theme.

High up there, almost in the clouds, a man and his chicken live in an attic flat. The frontal perspective on their refuge and its wide skies is immoveable and static. Florian Grolig gives us a distant insight into the microcosm of this ingenuous man of independent means. The meticulously detailed miniature uncovers the loneliness of a man who wants to preserve his idyllic world at all costs. But even brutal consequence won’t help this private individual to evade the impending war.

A corpulent hotel guest is consumed with longing for his former love, Suzanne. And with hunger. Searching for food in a strange city he has communication problems and instead of a meal only gets new shoes – far too tight and life-threatening. The whole situation sparks up. Izabela Plucińska uses clay to transform a short story by Roland Topor into a bizarre animation film that is sensual, but sometimes physical in an unpleasant and delicious way.

Pico do Fogo is the name of a volcano on the Cap Verde Islands whose last eruption buried the small community of Chã das Caldeiras under lava. It came like a black flood and covered everything. What’s left is a metre-high blanket of intricate forms from which a few scattered roofs protrude. But the colours are gradually returning – new green as well as the people who refuse to leave the area.
