Visitor groups in museum slippers shuffle through the Baroque castle of Łańcut near the Ukrainian border. The strange intruders are observed by the former masters of the castle from their oil paintings and by the inconspicuous wooden steps and chair legs – modest witnesses, never queried, who remember the dramatic history of the place.

The king watches the creation of his android through the eye of a window. The “thing” discovers itself as a female, sentient being, but recognises that it is only a perfectly programmed seduction machine for court intrigues. To accompany Stanislav Lem’s tale, the Brothers Quay develop stylised stages that end in nothingness. They are populated by puppets who communicate – with glances of deception.

“Splinters” gropes its way through darkness and a sound collage in which there are flashes of hard to classify scenes. Splinters from the past invade a woman’s domestic life. Through intense photographic and graphic treatment of the film’s images, Jerzy Kucia precisely documents the inner world of emotions and a human life in his animation.
