A biography told by a deserted room. The colour nuances succeed each other like the stages of life, bathing the furniture and plants in the light of memories. The room seems to react organically to time leaps. Experiences of three generations of Joana Silva’s family form the core of the main protagonist, described by the director as an “unknown family member whose body was assembled from fragments of my own.” The smallest objects were animated with a lot of texture.

The eighties, UK: three mates move to Liverpool to study art. Their leader is Shirley, the cool pub quiz champion. But he soon turns out to be a delinquent flatmate, the back rent is piling up, the rough tone becomes bullying: itching powder in underpants, the love interest seduced by another at a party. The mates are in the shit at all levels. How far can they still go? Who will surrender first?

A mining village in South Yorkshire. The mine, one of the last in Great Britain, is about to be closed. Les, a miner in his early 60s, tries to keep the spirit of the legendary strike 30 years ago awake. But the only thing people here are still interested in is the monument for the victims of that time and the right numbers at Bingo. The young leave or become casual labourers. Ruth Grimberg highlights a culture whose biggest fight is against forgetting.

On 14 June 2017, the Grenfell Tower in the London borough of North Kensington went up in flames. The fire in the 24-floor council housing complex, which killed 72 people due to safety deficiencies, attracted attention beyond the borders of the UK. Director Peiman Zekavat’s subject is the attitude of the media system in the face of a disaster. In the midst of media hype and outrage he struggles for a decent position as a filmmaker – an attempt at empathy.

The chronicle of an oral cavity: from inside, wildly traced, literally, with the tip of the tongue. An X-ray of the body decaying over time, fascinated by the amalgam of food, tongue, throat and stomach. Nostalgic feelings for what was lost and demands to be recovered by an obsession with perfection, which, in fact, leads to further destruction. This film damages the enamel of the conscious mind and provokes a subconscious avulsion, painful as the sound of a dental drill.

The Big Push Laurie Harris, Xin Li

In the midst of the First World War, Herbert James Gunn painted bathing young men in the South of France – soldiers, few of whom are believed to have survived the next day, which was to be one of the bloodiest in the war.

In the midst of the First World War, Herbert James Gunn painted bathing young men in the South of France – soldiers, few of whom are believed to have survived the next day, which was to be one of the bloodiest in the war. The painting “The Eve of the Battle of the Somme” inspired the Scottish poet John Glenday to a poem that he recites himself in this film. The sensitive glass painting lets dark premonitions descend upon the sun drenched situation. A serene anti war film.

A life-sized doll serves Horacio as the immortal likeness of his wife. But he falls under the spell of this artificial Hortensia. Based on a short story by Felisberto Hernández, the Brothers Quay have designed this role play of misperceptions as a bizarre chamber play with fascinating tableaux vivants. Distorted perspectives, mirror cabinets and the menacingly oscillating sound of an electronically manipulated woman’s voice become the architecture of Horacio’s feverish delirium.

Mechanical clocks may be out of fashion, but they give the charismatic protagonist of this short portrait something to hold on to in his life. He spends all his time repairing them in his modest flat. When he advances with precise movements to replace nearly invisible elements it looks like open heart surgery. The camera as an attentive observer and the ticking clock hands define the borders of his personal philosophy, which owes more to his experience of life than to functioning devices.

Two figures fall silent and meet in sibling-like familiarity and mutual dissociation. Separated, they don’t fare particularly well, seem ill. As if attracted by an invisible magnet, the two keep searching each other, flow into each other, hair first, and form a protected world of their own, free from the grasp of words. Huang Liang-Hsin uses spare drawings and pointed animation to create delicate moments of silence.
