The core of this film is a long interview with the infamous West German mercenary Siegfried Müller, supplemented by sequences shot for “Commando 52”. “The Laughing Man” broke new stylistic ground at the time. On the one hand it is regarded as a milestone of GDR film history, but on the other hand its production history and style make it one of the most controversial documentaries ever.

Katja Georgi won the 1963 Bronze Dove in Leipzig for her short cut out animation about four petty bourgeois and their assiduous attempts to play a harmonious home concert. The “Neues Deutschland” newspaper interpreted “Musici” as a pamphlet against West German philistines who ignored the arms race before their eyes and escaped into private music-making.

A hermetically sealed, uncomfortable universe. The hero, Einmart, is a torsoless head who just scratches along. The ordinary creatures are condemned to stay on the ground. Once, however, Einmart successfully attempts to fly. From above he can see the outside, where free and unlimited flying seems to be normal. Richly allusive. Subversive.

An attempt to understand what made the almost eighty-year-old Tilbert Eckertz hold on to communism. Eckertz worked as a business journalist in the GDR. Raked over the coals as a dissenter again and again he still calls himself a happy person. But the more his life progresses, the less he is able to banish injuries he suffered and inflicted from his self-image.

A group portrait of mercenaries, predominantly West German men, fighting in the Congo. The revelation that the commanders of the company were former Wehrmacht officers who had learned their craft in the war of annihilation against the Soviet Union and used it with obvious pleasure in the brutal fight against partisans in Africa was lightly dismissed as propaganda in the FRG.

A chronicle of the Brandenburg town of Zehdenick, a snapshot from the spring of 1988. Brickyards have determined the rhythm of this small town and its inhabitants for more than a hundred years. Here, the brick burners speak frankly about their working conditions. Volker Koepp’s film was classified by the Central Film Office as a depressing report about outdated production methods and defeatist contemporaries.

A mass in the Church of National Thanksgiving, ordered by the Pinochet government just after the coup in Chile in September 1973. When the new rulers leave the building, the words from the psalms appear at their back: “They cried unto the Lord but he answered them not. Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind; I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.”

Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg. The district where vegan food is celebrated today was a hot spot of petty crime in 1980: The motorcycle of a friend of Thomas Heise’s is stolen. Instead of going to the police, the victim and the film student set out into the milieu to investigate the matter. Direct cinema made in the GDR. Conflicts with the head of the university were not intended, but inevitable.
