What would a documentary about a man from Jarosław look like whose biography records no special events – while the big dramas happen on the television monitor? And yet this is life as lived: work, coffee, headache pills, vacations. A house that’s too big now that the children have moved out. Marcin Podolec in a touching way transfers his father’s life into the world of comics and creates a new genre in the process: the animated long term observation.

Ever since her husband and son were dragged out of the car and kidnapped by strangers four years ago, Lulu has drifted through her life in Mexico like a ghost. Though there is no trace of them she can’t stop searching. When is the right time to bury one’s hopes? Tatiana Huezo visually translates Lulu’s story into a reality that has cracked and shows the invisible: the feeling of absence – but also a path back to life.

Hiding: behind masks, the white balloon, a fiction. The fears run deep. After five years in exile in Europe the director returns to Iran to make a film. She asks her friends to act in it. What starts as a game during the shoot gradually turns into a brutal clash between those who stayed and the one who left. Who has the prerogative of interpretation? What is a stereotype, what does the West want to see, what do the Iranians want to reveal about themselves?

An extremely tender portrait of Aster, a blind young mother who lives with her little daughter in a shared home for single mothers in Ethiopia. Her low singing about love and little mice pervades the film like a seeing person’s dream. The little girl is still called Bethi, but Aster wants to change her name to Medanit: the Amharic word for cure. The child leads her from darkness to light. She is her mother’s eye.

The King wakes up after a long and deep sleep, but doesn´t know what to do with all the time he has. Hoping to find an answer he assembles an automaton, but in vain, because the wheel of time follows its own rules. In this bizarre fairy tale, the decomposition of organic matter, oxidized metal and cracked surfaces visually underline a cryptic puppet animation that circles like a helicoid around the main theme.

This film evokes memories of literature classes – but it’s unlikely that there was ever such a dynamic recital of Goethe’s ballad. And completely without words, too! As usual and with his customary precision, Schwizgebel makes gaudy paintings melt into each other or positions a split screen to show the different protagonists’ perspectives. The father’s ride with the sick child to the music of Schubert and Liszt alone is a feast for the eyes!

The gustatory experience of eating a fish eye in a crowded restaurant opens new worlds to one of the guests. A surrealist thrill like a ghost train ride for the palate: the eye is red, the smell of the dishes is red. This animation drawn with fine white lines on a black background unfolds an eerily beautiful sensuality. The whole city breathes the red of this dizzying adaptation of a script by Ramón Gómez de la Serna, who used to work with Luis Buñuel.

Day after day the sun shimmers over the harbour and the cafés – the eternal Croatian summer as a drawn diary. Dynamics are created by the repetitive use of original sounds and the increasing reduction of the animated drawings: sketches turn into graphical abstractions, objects into blotches of colour, free forms into geometrical ones. And a summer that is more than the sum of its parts slowly takes shape in the viewer’s head.

Christian regularly records videos he wants to give his little son as memorabilia and in which he talks about the future and a life he is not going to share. He thinks about what a father should explain – man to man. Intercutting these monologues with animated sequences and private recordings, the film revolves around the question: what is left of a person when they go?

High up there, almost in the clouds, a man and his chicken live in an attic flat. The frontal perspective on their refuge and its wide skies is immoveable and static. Florian Grolig gives us a distant insight into the microcosm of this ingenuous man of independent means. The meticulously detailed miniature uncovers the loneliness of a man who wants to preserve his idyllic world at all costs. But even brutal consequence won’t help this private individual to evade the impending war.

A vampire story without vampires – told in all shades of black, poison green and pimple pink. Disturbing and relentless like the clutches of a dictatorship. The world of the tragic hero and his lover is put out of joint by the sting of an initially tiny mosquito. After futile and lonely resistance, his better half leaves him. What is left that’s worth fighting for now? A parable in expressionist images and sounds.

When Bill Babbitt realizes his brother has committed a crime he agonizes over his decision- should he call the police? Utterly unobtrusive, the narrative reveals not only the tragic story of a family but also a pseudo-democratic society where people fall through the cracks. With only a few lines and muted colours the rotoscoped images that linger in the memory open an unusual perspective on America.

In a cold society where technology has marginalised communication and interhuman relations, a group of women take a trip to an exotic realm of heat – the habitat of fine facial hair and charming penises: Moustache Island. The film takes a look at the absurd side of sex tourism, creating an illusory world of intense colours and exaggerated stereotypes in which human desire is reduced to possession. A fast-paced adventure.

Apathy has infected a world confronted with the apocalypse. Amid this planetary desolation a group of three players still want to play mah-jong. Their problem: they can´t because they are one player short. This cutout animation inventively uses vintage patterns, textures, colours and sounds to build an artificial universe mired in an avant-garde atmosphere of melancholy.

People never talk about money in films. In bad times like the present, however, people’s thoughts and lives change and at some point the films follow. In this brilliantly filmed and edited miniature the residents of a Lisbon suburb never stop talking about money and the rare opportunities to get hold of it: second and third jobs, baking for the neighbourhood, living off your parents, renting to couch surfers … A carnival of survival in crisis.

A slow pan scans children’s faces with half-closed eyes directed at nothing. The long-term coma patients, children and adolescents, in a hospital in Warsaw are resting in a kind of limbo. Portraying this place of the enraptured as one of joy and laughter – beside the moments of desperation – is the feat achieved by Piotr Małecki, who manages to bring all those contrasts into focus in a few episodes.
