Preservationists secure the foundation walls of a camp where Jewish prisoners from Theresienstadt were forced to build a branch office of the Berlin Reich Main Security Office under miserable conditions. Other men are searching for Nazi memorabilia with a metal detector. And then there is Mrs. Werner, Christa Werner, who has been living here for so long that she remembers the “Jew hole” from the past.

In 2018 the Fifth French Republic celebrated its 60th anniversary. While the National Assembly debated a modernisation of the constitution amidst red plush, marble, gold leaf and verbal flourishes, activists of the “Les Lucioles du Doc” group tackled something similar, though in quite a different fashion. They brought together three groups of people who usually don’t have much say in society to discuss their wishes for a new constitution: male prisoners, the women’s association “Femmes Solidaires” from Villeneuve-Saint-Georges and a group of grammar school students.

For technical reasons, exchange among the groups is organised via collectively screened videos and turns out to be full of solidarity in general and full of conflict in detail. The first goal of “Nous le peuple”, as the participants confidently call themselves, is a hearing of their delegates before members of the National Assembly. Or might the disappointment be too much when their proposals meet only with the arrogance of power there? The film, shot from a position of emphatic observation, demonstrates what it could be like if Macron’s slogan of the “République en marche” were taken seriously and lead to action. And it asks whether participation can be demanded in other ways than the spectacular actions of the Yellow Vests.

This is about powerful men: politicians, king, one’s father. Amr Bayoumi’s old man was an authoritarian patriarch. On the old analogue black and white photos the head of the family sits between two other men, legs wide apart and a self-righteous, arrogant look in his eyes. Bayoumi’s relationship with him was never emotional.

Using personal memories – stories, pictures, newspaper cuttings, cartoons – the Egyptian filmmaker reconstructs the history of his native country since the 1950s, the political upheavals from Nasser to Mubarak and finally the 2001 revolution. He skilfully uses a larger metaphor for this purpose: the famous statue of Ramses II and its curious fate. It was found, reconstructed and erected several times at various locations. Most recently it had to move in 2006 from Ramses Square to another interim location– presumably because Mubarak and the underground station named after him would not tolerate a pharaoh above him. The mammoth project took twelve hours. Countless people followed the monument on its way through the crowded streets of Cairo, screaming farewells, shaking their heads without understanding. Ramses as a symbol of military, power and triumph becomes a political pawn here and the rhetorical question of the title becomes an emblem of a country between authority and revolution.

An on-site inspection: Worn parquet floors. Wooden panelling from which the portraits of famous composers are hanging – some just pinned up without a frame and placed, supposedly, so that the musical geniuses discreetly cover damaged spots. Piles of seating and storage furniture from every stylistic period which would ruin any antiques dealer, no matter how shrewd. Oh genius loci, what vandals have you fallen victim to?

The times have swept over the renowned Paliashvili Music School for Gifted Children in Tbilisi – both the old Soviet era and the new Georgian one. They tore holes into the walls but – and this is what Marita Stocker depicts in her portrait of the place, beautifully photographed by Mitja Hagelüken – they couldn’t touch the spirit of the institution. The influx of talents from all over the country is unbroken, the dreams of the future virtuosos are unbridled, and the high standards of the teachers who have grown old with “their” school are undiminished. The spark is still alive in them: of anger over an etude played diligently but indifferently, occasionally of disgust with the casual, even careless outfits of their students, of love of music and their pupils.

Without solidarity, hope would long since have died. The borders in the Italian-French Roya valley have been closed since 2015. Countless refugees try in vain to leave the Italian town of Ventimiglia for France and are sent back again and again. But the liberal inhabitants of this stubborn region refuse to settle for this. Together they oppose the law, shelter young migrants, provide them with bread behind the backs of the police – plainly doing everything to give these people a future. So in the foggy gorges far from the great European metropolises there is a community that stands together and just wants to help, resists – out of love of their homeland, out of human kindness, out of the shared belief in a world where we can live together peacefully and which is worth fighting for. “Words of Bandits” shows an oasis of hope. A film about arriving, progressing and approaching each other.
