Like an increasing number of children and adolescents (not just) in the U.S., Davion, Emily and Moy are overweight. Despite coming from different backgrounds, their lives are similar: a vicious circle of mobbing, self-hatred, recriminations, health problems and the wish to be thinner. The film brings home the fact that this disease is only the symptom of a troubled nutritional culture and unstable family structures, and the young people’s fight against their own body.

There’s a lot of nothing in Siberia. It’s as vast as the hopes of many families for their young daughters’ careers. Lured by promises of salvation they flock to the mass castings of international model agencies. This is where we meet the former model Ashley, who has lived through all the ups and downs of the industry and now works as a scout who recruits girls. Among them is 13-year-old Nadya, whom we follow into a world where nothing is worth more than youth, innocence, and a certain beauty ideal.

Claressa’s nickname is T-Rex. She is 17 years old and a professional boxer, and that’s not the only thing that makes her an exotic bird in this male dominated sport. In 2012, women’s boxing finally became an Olympic sport and so she, the underdog, got to represent the U.S. as one of three athletes. Between the challenges of growing up and her tough physical training she develops a ready wit and more self-confidence – but the real fights are waiting for her outside the ring.

Alan loves to dance. He likes to be among people and used to be very lonely. He can talk about it now that a language module translates his thoughts into a computer voice. He has had a deficiency of the nervous system and motor functions since he was a child, he’s in a wheelchair. And, like he said, Alan loves to dance.
