None other than Goethe once said: “Let me praise my Leipzig! It is a small Paris and educates its people.” It’s precisely for the purpose of education that 17-year-old high-school graduate Angelika arrives in town. She meets the racing cyclist Tommy at her feisty landlady Mrs. Häublein’s flat. Naturally for Tommy, the competitive athlete, all girls (who he thinks are childish anyway) and love are taboo. And just as naturally Angelika is put in a boys-only class, finds new admirers all the time, and must be protected by Tommy until the happy ending …

That really doesn’t sound like a documentary film at all and consequently the light comedy based on Rudi Strahl’s book features a who’s who of the top East German actors (including a very young Jaecki Schwarz and Evelyn Opoczynski) as well as pop singer Klaus-Dieter Henkler in his only film role. And yet the film belongs in the Zeitkino, where he was most probably screened in the early 1970s. When it was released in 1971 it was praised for showing Leipzig as “gay and full of joie de vivre”. In fact it gives us an authentic impression of the atmosphere in the GDR at a period of time associated with a temporary boom and optimism, presenting the image of a city in summer that knows nothing of the decline and agony to come.
