In October 1813, the decisive battle in the wars of liberation against Napoleon’s foreign rule – the Battle of the Nations – took place near Leipzig. More than 92,000 of the roughly 600,000 soldiers from over a dozen nations lead into this battle were killed or wounded. A typhus epidemic following the battle claimed many more victims among Leipzig’s civilian population. This fully animated film by Leipzig-born comic strip artist Schwarwel shows these victims, the war, destruction and suffering. “1813 – God With Us” is a film to promote community.

An electrical banana, a mammoth in the garden, a singing mushroom and the “synthe-sigher” – or avant-garde, cult and underground, all these terms can be applied to this total work of art from Karl-Marx-Stadt. Founded in 1998, the band quickly became an insider’s tip in the relevant clubs of the GDR and managed not to be swallowed by the system until their abrupt end in 1993. Music with electronic elements, dadaist lyrics, monotonous sprechgesang, cryptic or deliberately silly costumes and masks on stage, and the use of painting and film – multimedia before the term was invented – were the hallmarks of AG Geige’s style. Their consistent rejection of sense and worship of the absurd were not just expressions of a whole generation’s attitude to life, but a subversive strategy in a country where even the most banal utterances were seen as political statements.
Carsten Gebhardt, a native of Chemnitz, raises a monument to the band by interviewing its members and reanimating the specific AG Geige aesthetics in collages of music and Super 8 films. Big names like Ronald Galenza, Christoph Tannert and Lutz Schramm describe the concept of a superficial “dilettantism” concealing “professional work and a lived quirkiness”. In that sense, Gebhardt’s film is a worthy amateur film.
The subversive seed flowered, by the way. The sons of two members of the band founded Kraftclub, a contemporary cult band.

It’s the story of Edith and Christian Penksowie from the village of Rohde, situated in the middle of Muskau heath, a nature preserve in Lusatia. The inhabitants of this region have always lived in harmony with nature and their Sorbian traditions. But the forests are gradually displaced by open cast coal mining and the villages and people are following them.

Jörg Herrmann’s animated films are firmly entrenched in the memories of people socialised in the GDR. His animation table, which is still standing near Dresden, far removed from all media hype and still used, produced legendary “Abendgrüße” (evening greetings). Herrmann is one of the last of his kind, an original master of the silhouette technique who has retained his fresh and curious perspective on the world.

In raw and unvarnished images the film shows little blonde Anna-Lena, prancing around in her pink child’s world and getting on her parents’ nerves, because Anna-Lena absolutely refuses to play outside. She’s afraid of dirt and prefers to clean house all day, full of herself and nothing else. In in a drama straight out of Shock-Headed Peter, the 4-minute animation shows the pretty little girl’s transformation into her ideal: a soft, pink, albeit lifeless and stiff puppet. Her parents are watching the sinister process helplessly and even the doctor is running out of options.

This film takes a look at the controversial Roma Kwiek family. We meet family members in Warsaw, Stockholm and Mannheim, all of whom have their own ways of dealing with their identity, the dubious reputation associated with their name, and the stigmatization of the Roma. As non-representative members of the Kwiek family they are exposed to a view from outside that reproduces social prejudice. “Repräsent” asks what this view reveals about the persons behind the camera and to what extent the individual can represent the entirety in the first place.

The encounter between the farmer Maria Labri and the German free jazz musician Günter “Baby” Sommer in Kommeno, a village in the northwest of the Greek mainland. Sommer composes the “Songs for Kommeno” for the village because he is deeply moved by its fate. In 1943 it was invaded by the German Wehrmacht who gratuitously killed its inhabitants, among them many children. Maria Labri is a survivor of the massacre. Her lament, a Miroloi, flows into Sommer’s composition.
