A documentary experiment: six women, three housemaids and three employers, who discuss housework and hierarchies, respect and social status, habits and dreams in front of different-coloured backgrounds (red, blue and yellow). Fragmented tales of work and family circumstances make the viewer create their own montage in their heads. Biographies crystallize in front of their inner eye.
All six women, aged between 35 and 64, are played by the filmmaker Inès Rabadán herself. Costumes and masks are identical, so the women whose stories we share are neither marked as representatives of their class (or profession) nor as individual personalities. We hear (and experience!) only their voices and see the actor-director’s magnificent appropriation of their respective personalities through lip-synching and miming. It seems as if Inès Rabadán translated Brecht’s theoretical scepticism of the reliability of simple documentary representation into visual practice: “A recording of the Krupp works or AEG yields almost nothing about these institutes. Actual reality has slipped into the functional. To achieve truth, something must be constructed, something artificial, staged.”

Ralph Eue

In this first film of her “Salvation Project”, Morris addresses the religious baggage with which South Africa has furnished her. She, who describes herself as “atheist-agnostic-apostatic”, looks for the causes of her love of consecrated rooms and sacral architecture, her fascination with misbelievers and heretics, her dislike of religious rituals and institutions. In the process, she combs through the immigration history of South Africa to find all the immigration waves that washed up missionaries and religious refugees on its shores since the 17th century.

The eponymous book, the visual and intellectual centre of this film from the Salvation cycle, is a collection of engravings and poems about English country life. It was presented as a school prize to Morris’s great-grandfather’s brother in the 1860s: a boy from the dusty, rocky landscape of the Cape of Good Hope came across pictures of luscious European meadows. Not much has changed since then, the filmmaker reports. She remembers her own childhood, when all the pictures, stories and books came from other parts of the world, and wonders how foreign and own experiences fit together.

Fireworks burst into the sky above Texas – perceived light years away from the idyllic town where 14-year-old Sara is growing up as the oldest daughter of a large family of goat farmers. She takes tender care of the animals and the manufacture of various dairy products; helps raise her siblings who are home-schooled like her – according to a strict interpretation of the bible. Nearby, cowboys from the neighbourhood organise rodeos, showing us an America we have long believed forgotten. Sara’s inner conflict between her subtle attraction to the young bull-rider Colby and her future as a devout wife emerges almost imperceptibly.
The great lucidity of the narrative culminates as a child slips out of the mother’s womb in front of Sara’ eyes, confronting her directly with her destiny. The camera “breathes” incredibly close to the protagonists, capturing that inner turmoil in tender pastels. It makes the heart pound so hard that Sara’s mother can only pray for it to finally stop going crazy.
