Agit pop art condensed and charged to the maximum. Frenetic ingenuity full of a genuinely materialist sensuality and a visually powerful forward thrust. In terms of content: a cinematic brotherly kiss on the occasion of the death of Bác Hồ, also known as Hồ Chí Minh (1890–1969). Also: formulating the certainty that the fight will go on, must go on.

The core of this film is a long interview with the infamous West German mercenary Siegfried Müller, supplemented by sequences shot for “Commando 52”. “The Laughing Man” broke new stylistic ground at the time. On the one hand it is regarded as a milestone of GDR film history, but on the other hand its production history and style make it one of the most controversial documentaries ever.

Katja Georgi won the 1963 Bronze Dove in Leipzig for her short cut out animation about four petty bourgeois and their assiduous attempts to play a harmonious home concert. The “Neues Deutschland” newspaper interpreted “Musici” as a pamphlet against West German philistines who ignored the arms race before their eyes and escaped into private music-making.

The protagonists or rather heroes of this first film by Adina Pintilie are inhabitants of a psychiatric home in Romania. It’s taken for granted that God speaks here, and the “lunatics” very politely discuss who rules the rain. This debut film was celebrated all over the world as a poetical and political masterpiece and won the DOK Leipzig Golden Dove in 2007.

A hermetically sealed, uncomfortable universe. The hero, Einmart, is a torsoless head who just scratches along. The ordinary creatures are condemned to stay on the ground. Once, however, Einmart successfully attempts to fly. From above he can see the outside, where free and unlimited flying seems to be normal. Richly allusive. Subversive.

The montage of a day in the North Vietnamese capital, including the inferno of an air raid. Álvarez saw himself as an interventionist artist, as a contributor to building a new and hopefully better world which was to be defined on the basis of present conditions and then advanced. The reality of his films is that of his ideals, opinions and aspirations.

An attempt to understand what made the almost eighty-year-old Tilbert Eckertz hold on to communism. Eckertz worked as a business journalist in the GDR. Raked over the coals as a dissenter again and again he still calls himself a happy person. But the more his life progresses, the less he is able to banish injuries he suffered and inflicted from his self-image.

A group portrait of mercenaries, predominantly West German men, fighting in the Congo. The revelation that the commanders of the company were former Wehrmacht officers who had learned their craft in the war of annihilation against the Soviet Union and used it with obvious pleasure in the brutal fight against partisans in Africa was lightly dismissed as propaganda in the FRG.

A chronicle of the Brandenburg town of Zehdenick, a snapshot from the spring of 1988. Brickyards have determined the rhythm of this small town and its inhabitants for more than a hundred years. Here, the brick burners speak frankly about their working conditions. Volker Koepp’s film was classified by the Central Film Office as a depressing report about outdated production methods and defeatist contemporaries.

What the line describes as a concept of life does look tempting, though it’s nice that there are one or two crinks, too. Laid-back, witty and profound.

Give me two photos, an editing table and a piece of music, Santiago Álvarez (1919–1998) is said to have claimed as his filmmaking motto. He was speaking literally, even though in the end it was never just a couple of photos. In this case: pages torn from “Time Magazine”, especially pictures of police brutality in the US, plus Lena Horne’s jazz version of the Hebrew folksong “Hava Nagila.”

“I play what I feel.” An animated Canadian documentary about Oscar Peterson (1925–2007), one of the giants of jazz. Combined with historical interviews, atmospheric drawings show the highs and lows of his biography. His little “Hymn to Freedom” contains the essence of a whole life in a nutshell.

Why words if symbolic image elements speak for themselves? The short film shows how numerous East Germans get rid of their lived history after the reunification. Contemporary history crystallises on an East Berlin garbage dump: a location of “historic” relics from the socialist age that people no longer need for the dawning era, objects that have lost their utility value after the end of a state.

The almost unreal filmic form overlays what is shown like a disturbing filter, like the narrative of a failed dream. There is still – or perhaps, from a distance, again – space for poetry in this landscape of disillusionment.

A mass in the Church of National Thanksgiving, ordered by the Pinochet government just after the coup in Chile in September 1973. When the new rulers leave the building, the words from the psalms appear at their back: “They cried unto the Lord but he answered them not. Then did I beat them small as the dust before the wind; I did cast them out as the dirt in the streets.”

A story in four songs and a monument to the victims of Chilean fascism. Even before the opening credits we hear Violeta Parra’s accusing song “¿Que dirá el Santo Padre?” to images of the august understanding between the church and the dictator. Accompanying and following the credits: three sequences featuring the murdered singer Víctor Jara (1932–1973) – recording in a studio, as a people’s tribune and as an iconic martyr.
